Can’t ThinApp or App-V Dragon Naturally Speaking for VDI? Layer It!

Unidesk is starting to be adopted in healthcare because VDI admins are finding it easier to package and deliver apps with our layering technology than with app virtualization. I was just at a Boston-area hospital that’s implementing virtual desktops for a new wing. They don’t know if they’re going with Citrix XenDesktop or VMware View yet, but they’ve already purchased Unidesk as their desktop provisioning, app delivery, and personalization platform. What convinced them was how quickly and easily they could layer apps with Unidesk and assign them to desktops – even the apps they’ve had trouble virtualizing. During their pilot, they tested lots of apps. One was Dragon Naturally Speaking.

“We’d heard there were a lot of problems trying to virtualize Dragon with ThinApp and App-V. So we tried it in Unidesk. It took 15 minutes. Unidesk spun up a VM with a clean gold image. We ran the Dragon setup. Connected the mic. And we were done. We assigned the new Dragon layer to a few desktops, and after a reboot, I was talking to my virtual desktop. It couldn’t have been any easier.”

Searching on-line for how to virtualize Dragon Naturally Speaking for VDI turned up:

As you can see, the experiences ranged from “unsuccessful” to “it couldn’t communicate with Office” to “4 days later…”

We’ll be sharing more healthcare stories in our upcoming healthcare customer launch. In the meantime, try Unidesk with your hard-to-virtualize apps. We’d love to share your stories here.

Knowing just how difficult Naturally Speaking is to get to work reliably as a native installing Windows I wonder if I should consider layering it in Unidesk for native install

Simon, if you've got a vSphere-based VDI environment, we'll set you up with an account and our bits so you can try it!

Can't remember when our last briefing was - would love to update you. DM me with some times that are convenient for you over the next few weeks.
