Virtualization expert and industry veteran Ron Oglesby has done it again. In the third session of "GeekOn with Ron", Ron discussed Remote Office/Branch Office (ROBO) VDI Design Options. In this session he explained server placement to maximize performance, the impact ROBO VDI has on bandwidth needs, storage options for remote VDI, and the impact ROBO VDI will have on your existing remote office infrastructure...

Session two of GeekOn with Ron is in the books! After tackling the topic of server design in your VDI environment in session one of the series, virtualization expert and industry veteran Ron Oglesby took on the topic of local storage vs. centralized storage for VDI. Yesterday marked the first in our bi-weekly series of technical webinars on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), aptly named "Get your GeekOn with Ron." In Session 1, virtualization expert and industry veteran Ron Oglesby told all there is to know about server design in VDI environments. Ron tackled the topics of server CPU selection, desktop-to-core guesstimation, memory, local storage options, ...

I have been giving a lot of thought to client side virtualization lately, specifically the idea of type 1 hypervisors on x86 machines. After all this time I have decided that they aren’t worth any more brain cycles (I have few to spare). Back in 2006 I wrote about the client side hypervisor at Brian Madden’s site and was really excited about what I might see by 2009… What did all that...

One of the most interesting things I get to deal with at Unidesk is the integration and testing of different storage solutions for VDI. Local SAS, Local SSD, FusionIO, iSCSI SAS, NFS, etc etc.   It’s been a ton of fun simply because there are so many disk configuration options out there and lots to learn about each one. But, what’s been most interesting to me lately is the idea of the...

Yesterday I was surprised to find out that in Win 2008 R2 Active Directory environments there is a user account property for a “Personal Virtual Desktop”.   While it’s not earth shaking, it is further validation of the concept of a centralized Virtual Desktop within Microsoft. So I had to a little digging and find out if I could leverage this attribute.

The interesting thing about...

Like many 'power' users I don't think much about saving documents, visio files, spreadsheets, images, videos, or anything else to my laptop. Actually, I like having as much of this junk as I can on my local drive... I always know where it is then :-).

So when it comes to VDI, I logically understood the importance of data centralization but didn't see it as critical as some of my associates have...

We wanted to call attention to this great panel discussion that is being hosted by Wikibon titled "Desktop Virtualization Cold Hard Facts." The panel features well-known bloggers and respected technologies including Glenda Canfield (@glendacanfield), Michael Keen (@michael_keen), and Jason Langone (@langonej).

Here's the description of the event directly from the invite:

Premise of the call... The idea...

Despite our best efforts to remain in stealth, technology industry analyst The 451 Group has started tracking Unidesk as part of its desktop and application virtualization coverage.

Gartner was the first analyst firm to mention Unidesk in a published report as bringing something innovative to the desktop virtualization table. Recently, The 451's Rachel Chalmers began including Unidesk in her write...

I'm fortunate to be constantly meeting with customers and VARs. I listen to their pain points, gather feedback, and categorize requirements. Their needs, while similar, are all unique enough to give me fresh perspectives. I find the whole process to be really fun. Geeky, yes, but fun (which certainly doesn't surprise those who know me).

Recently, we've been hearing over and over that IT decision-...

Brian Madden, I have 7 words for you: when you are right, you are Right!

In his recent blog VDI, VDI+, VDI.next... Really, it's all about all desktops, Brian wrote: "Instead of trying to redefine 'VDI' to include all future types of desktop deployment, let's just called it 'desktops.'"

We couldn't agree more. Over the next 5 years, the definition of "desktop" will evolve to mean delivering ...

We attended the Goldman Sachs Software and IT Services Retreat 2008 last week, and desktop virtualization was the hot topic of discussion during Day 2.

Citrix, Symantec, and VMware sent some of their top executives to discuss why all three believe it's a major growth opportunity. Goldman Sachs analyst Sarah Friar moderated the well-attended Desktop Virtualization Panel, asking "What's Your Vision...

Hawaii is one of my favorite places in the world, having visited all of the islands on many occasions. So when I saw the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Honolulu chapter is focusing its November presentation on "What You Need to Know About Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)," the temptation to buy a ticket from BOS to HNL was almost too much to resist.

A full seminar dedicated...

At last week's Gartner Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando, Fl, Gartner analysts highlighted the top 10 technologies and trends that will be strategic for most organizations in 2009 ("strategic" being technology with the potential for significant impact on the enterprise in the next three years, with high potential for disruption to IT or the business, the need for a major dollar investment, or the risk of...

A few months ago, we sent a 16 page survey to more than 5,000 enterprise desktop administrators to validate our understanding of the desktop administrators' world and verify our approach to virtual desktop management. We clearly struck a chord, because the response rate far exceeded our expectations. So we're going to share the survey results with you over the next weeks in our blog. Be sure to bookmark...

Update: If you are looking for more information on Unidesk and RingCube, please read our latest response to Citrix's Acquisition of RingCube.

The desktop virtualization space continues to heat up, which keeps this marketing guy and avid Boston sports fan from spending too much time lamenting what could have been another Patriots run at NFL perfection.

This week saw another vendor - RingCube - debut...
