For those who have been following Unidesk and have taken the opportunity to hear our customers talk about their VDI projects during one of our several customer webinars, you probably already know the story of the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families and Menlo College. If you didn’t get a chance to attend these webinars and watching the recording isn’t for you, you can now read about their stories on the Enterprise CIO Forum’s website.

Both VDI projects are very different in that each CIO had their own list of goals for the project, yet each project also had a list of common objectives, for example:

  • Reduce the operational costs of desktop management
  • Minimize capital expenses by reducing storage requirements
  • Give end-users a desktop that they can fully customize and is as good, or even better, than their current desktops

Maytee Aspuro, CIO of Wisconsin DCF, is using VMware View to deliver the virtual desktops and Unidesk for virtual desktop provisioning, management, and end-user personalization. Since Wisconsin DCF is a relatively new agency that was formed from two predecessor agencies, Aspuro wanted the agency’s overall desktop technology solution to be as reliable and scalable as possible, while enabling the agency to customize and deliver services centrally. Also, since Wisconsin DCF deals with sensitive data about children, the ability to centralize the agency’s data for security purposes was a huge driver for their project.

Raechelle Clemmons, CIO of Menlo College, also has a very interesting story. Due to the size of Menlo College, virtualizing only some of their desktops was not practical in order to get the return on investment necessary to justify the project, so they knew that they needed to come up with a solution that would allow them to virtualize all their desktops and support all use cases. Menlo College was able to use VMware View and Unidesk to simultaneously deploy both persistent and non-persistent virtual desktops for all users and use cases across campus. By using only local storage, they were able to bring their annual cost per desktop in line with the cost of a physical PC – well under $300 (excluding staff costs).
